Get Your Work Finished with Remote Access

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began over one year ago, a lot of us have had to work from home and change many aspects of our day-to-day tasks. Businesses now provide contactless delivery, online shopping, and virtual meetings to adhere to the safety guidelines of COVID. These guidelines have us and many other businesses working from home which can lead to operational and logistical headaches. Luckily, the following remote access solutions can relieve some of these headaches and get your team back on track! 

Accessing shared files with a VPN 

One of the oldest and most-used remote access solutions is the virtual private network (VPN). This simple, secure solution is used to connect a computer to a remote network in a different geographical location. It can be used for a wide variety of applications – the most popular being the purpose of sharing files and data. Plenty of businesses have servers at their office which contain files, data, and backups for employees to share. The problem is that when employees are not in the office, they cannot access anything on these servers. However, a VPN can fix this problem and allow staff outside of the office to connect and access the server, regardless of the employee’s location.  

Using a remote desktop 

A remote desktop allows the user to connect to another computer and use that computer as if it were right in front of them. The remote desktop goes hand in hand with the VPN, which makes it a valuable tool for many businesses. Businesses that use large applications or would not like their employees to have private work resources on computers outside of the office can benefit by using a remote desktop. Providing the employees have a VPN, a remote desktop can be created which staff can use to complete work on big applications and access sensitive data securely without having to be in the office. 

Using Microsoft Azure – Windows Virtual Desktop 

Windows Virtual Desktop is like the remote desktop solution, except it does not require a VPN. This is because Windows Virtual Desktop is completely on the cloud and only requires an internet connection. Windows Virtual Desktop is very reliable and can be used by employees who need to access large applications or sensitive information but cannot transport or use their workstations.  

Using third-party applications 

Here at Evident IT, we have chosen to use third-party applications created for remote access. These remote access applications can be installed on a computer then remotely accessed by another computer providing they have a password, PIN, or the proper credentials. Like the Windows Virtual Desktop, a third-party application does not require a VPN. Some examples of our favourite remote access applications are ConnectWise Control, TeamViewer, and Cisco WebEx.
